Fun day,

So I'm visiting the folks and wanted a project Found the the Slingerland Niles, COS on eBay. Arranged to pick up same. The Gretsch marcher was sitting next to it, with an early Slingerland key hanging off a string. Cool drum and been needing that key so $75 later Gretsch is in the car.

Original plan was to shoot a video of how to restore metal drums. This one doesn't need a complete teardown. Serial number is 6111xx which is off the chart.

I know nothing of Gretsch marchers. If anyone could help with how I did and what key and holder should be on the drum would be great. Appears to be the only issue. Shell measures in at 15" x 12"

Here are the just out of the car pics.

Thanks!

Creighton

Creighton - Two great buys! Man I have been so tempted lately to pick up an old marcher just for a display piece. The one you found is perfect. Right down to the khaki military strap! That's the kind of drum you don't touch, just find a cool spot to display it and enjoy it. You'll have fun with the Slingy too! How does that one sound?

John

Too many great drums to list here!

John,

Slingerland original reso head is ripped so don't know yet :-(.

I figured wall hanger as well on the Gretsch marcher. Getting the bits back to moving and it's a player big time. It will get calfs but even with the mylars it has a huge deep sound like nothing I've ever heard. Gotta love the unexpected finds.

Thanks all! Wish the folks were doing better. This flu is kicking my butt and the folks are in their 80's.

Wayne, I'll put in on a scale in the am. It doesn't weigh much of anything. Busy banging on it so haven't taken it apart yet. Looks to be a 2 ply maple inner. stained mahogany outer. Maple rims.

Robyn, I keep picking it up and wishing it could tell me it's stories over the years. Nice try but this ones not going anywhere :-) Since you asked, get first dibs if it must go.

Slingerland is coming along great. Not a single dent or scratch. Cleaned the batter head up and this drum was hardly played. Nothing better to do so did a complete teardown after all. Bits are enjoying a Dawn bath. Video will have to wait until the next one.

Hope everyone can find a vintage marcher. Wonderful drums.
