We have a Winner!!! Cleveland Rogers 5 piece Silver Sparkle Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Bought this one last week. It was only on auction for a couple hours when I saw it and grabbed it Buy It Now.

Crappy pictures. Worse description. To make it even worse, even though the buyer has a 117 feedback, he has only had 4 active feedbacks since 2008. All the rest was before that.

1200 smackers. Should I risk it? Been wanting a 5 piece Cleveland Rogers. Wait wait wait. Oh poop, if I wait, I'll loose it...... and the Buy It Now button takes another victim. LOL

I've been biting my nails since the auction. LOL

Just opened it up and I'm perusing it. I wouldn't say it's mint right now but by the time I'm through stripping it down and detailing it.... it will be real real near mint.

To quote my own saying about eBay...... Sometimes you get the elevator. Sometimes you get the shaft. The last 2 times, I got the shaft. This time I got the elevator. All the way to the penthouse.

I'm pretty happy. I'll post some pics as I get it detailed.

This one's definitely a keeper.

I thought it was a great deal.

One [maybe not so good] thing. I'm trying to date it and I noticed the lugs are first generation Beavertails [felt and all].

I read in Rob Cook's book that there was some problem with screw posts breaking on the first gen Beavertails. On the second generation, they used a different screw (#8 24 tpi slotted machine screw 1st gen vs. #7 28 tpi slotted hex head screw in the 2nd gen).

I'm going to strip this down to detail it anyway. Should I re-install the lugs with different screws? I can't imagine that working. Don't the threads on the screws need to match the threads on the lugs ?

I had a kit with those 1st gen Beavertails. It's actually not the screws that have the problem, it's the posts on the lug itself, they snap off under too much strain because the metal is too thin. When they switched to the thinner screws, they were able to have thicker posts that don't snap off.

I would just carefully check all of the lugs for broken posts...you'll see the lug lifting off the shell a little if one of the posts has snapped. If removing a lug, be careful to not tighten the screws too much when putting it back on the shell. The easiest solution is to just replace any broken lugs with the 2nd generation Beavertail, problem solved!

Thanks,

Bill

Nice circa 1964-65 Londoner kit!

My first R. kit was like it,but in Blue Sparkle, and had the rare,22" BD....

Bought them in around 1973!

Here's something strange...

The reinforcing rings are a 5 ply laminate. Everything I read in the Rob Cook's book (and here) generally refers to the reinforcing rings as solid maple.

Anyone aware of Rogers using laminated reinforcing rings in 1964 - 1965?

I think think by the dayton era the rings were ply,but I believe there is a transitional period, yours may be that.
