Hey Gents......some opinions please. Since I have almost exhausted my search for a 70's Vistalite kit in monster sizes, I have now considered simply buying a new one. The only thing I have heard is that the new kits are made better and stronger than the vintage ones......I also just found out that the lugs are "small" lugs compared to the standard "large" lugs that are usually used. This I do not like. Is this true? I would appreciate any info regarding the pros and cons of new versus old.........thanks in kindflower
Vistalite - To new or not to new?
the lugs are the same size as the 70's classic lugs, not the smaller ones. I have that kit, the re-issue Amber 26,14,16,18 here in my collection and I'm about to take pictures to send to a guy in Australia and I'll also post them here. This would be the first re-issue kit I've acquired as I prefer to deal in original 70's Vistalites but, oh well, I gotta climb out from under my rock at some point anyway.........pics should be up this afternoon. Not yet sure what price to ask but the kit is absolutely unmarked, scratch free and certainly as good as any "brand new" set. This one is 3 years old.
I do have a 70's 26,14,18,20 Vistalite but it's smokey black and I believe that was a color you weren't interested in.

It was the solid black that I sure do not want.....Is this "smoke"...translucent? That is still very cool. The most undesirable Vistalite's are the solid white and black....opec, if you will..so what is your opinion since you seem to really have knowledge on these kits. What are the differences in quality between new and old?
you can get them with large or mini lugs, modern or classic spurs,etc...
and i'm not sure how big of sizes or amount of drums your looking for, but...

i did see a clear listlite kit with a 26", but i can't find it today.
oops, sorry. your in canada. i didn't notice that.
I really can't offer an opinion as this re-issue Amber kit is the first I've ever had that wasn't original 70's. Yes the shells appear to be heavier and they put the 1/2" spurs on the 26" bass drum which is for sure an improvement.
I much prefer the original tuning rods which are exclusively Ludwig to the ones they use now but that is purely cosmetic and only matters to people like me! A very clean original 70's Vistalite would still cost you less than what they are asking for new ones out of the box but again, it would be just a matter of personal preference. Mine leans heavily towards the original Ludwigs.

Me as well.......I am only forty, but old school....I am especially obsessed with LUDWIG drums from the 70's(preferably early 70's). I have a beautiful 1971 all original super classic...24..18....14...with a 6.5 Supra snare and all matching Atlas stands, right down to my cowbell! What would you sell that "smoke" vistalite kit for?

If you want just the 14x26 bass, 10x14 tom ( I also have the 12x15 ), 16x18 and 18x20 floors I'd take $2,250.00. The bass drum has the center tom mount and original owners obviously mounted the HUGE 10x14 and 12x15 toms on the bass drum as the shell has those ever so common "dings" on either side of the mount. Obviously, if you are interested, I can send you pictures of the whole kit with specific shots of the bass drum "dings" but other than that, the drums are very clean with no cracks anywhere.

Very nice.....yes, those are "smoke"....much nicer than black..I will definitely stew on those. Shipping is what always makes me cringe.....not that you wouldn't ship them carefully, but the COST! It may be $300-$400...I live in Canada.
TSOF if you have any close family or friends on the US side of the border maybe you could have them shipped there. And then drive em home. Simply "borrowed" from a friend should anyone ask or question. Just a thought.
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
