vintage ludwig keystone snare anomaly??

Loading...

hey yall,

just picked up this '62 pre serial keystone badge ludwig snare, took off the head and to my surprise, on the inside of the badge grommet, there seems to be a badge cutout backing attached? the badge and grommet are original to the drum so this came from the factory like this.

ive had several vintage ludwig snares yet ive never seen anything like this before, was this common practice for ludwig or has anyone seen this before?

thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this question!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Not common, but not rare either.

Some people have found multiple badges stacked as spacers inside the drum!

Guessing they do the internal one when the drilling's created an unfortunate spilt & the grommet won't fit properly w/out it. Perhaps another wrote this in an earlier post,

I own a WFL snare drum constructed out of "masonite". It was an idea the Chief had to make cheaper shells. Like the drum pictured here, the inside has 6 or 7 WFL badges firming up the grommett.

Figure the guy on the line putting on the badges needs a washer or spacer for whatever reason but has neither that are right there handy. What he does have handy is a bin full of badges...and there you go.

I have one as well on a 1958 BDP pre serial number 6.5x14 Symphonic I have. Obviously, you can see why mine was put on. I think it's a rare & very cool thing that makes these drums just a little more "personal"

is there a date stamp in that symphonic? I ask because that pre serial badge didn't come out until 60. the baseball bat mufflers came out even after that. beautiful drum..
