Vintage Ludwig 3ply maple/poplar/maple or Bigfoot?

Loading...

I have seen many references of Ludwig 3 ply drums from about 1969 through the early 70's as being maple/poplar/maple. Any shell from that period that I have ever taken the wrap off has been maple/poplar/mahogany.

My experience is somewhat limited but so far I have purchased two separate random toms off of ebay, both BO pointy badge with clear interior, both maple/poplar/mahogany. I bought them to add to my existing kit, also BO pointy badge with clear interior and also maple/poplar/mahogany. None of these drums had rounded edges like my 1967 kit either.

I am beginning to doubt they even exist. Has anyone ever seen one? I can not find any proof on the web or in person but it seems to be generally accepted that this is the makeup of of plys from this period. It's also the basis of the Legacy line.

Proofread this. I believe you have typed something wrong. You are not making a clear point or asking a clear question.

Yes I'm confused about whether you are asking about the shell material, or the style of bearing edge. Or something else?

Sorry for the corn fusion. I meant to say I have never seen a maple, poplar, maple shell. Do they actually exists?

yes by all means they exist. ive seen several. i assume the maple exterior is what you are questioning as the interiors are clear maple from this period?

I am saying that they are like the pic I posted and not truly maple/poplar/maple. Even the ones in natural maple finish have a layer of mahogany and a veneer of maple instead of the wrap. This is my experience with every ludwig drum I have looked at from this period up until they went to 6ply.

Does it really matter. No. Just wondered why the so called best sounding Ludwigs are misrepresented. The new ones do not use mahogany.

Mine are Maple Poplar Maple.

I guess if there is no dark ring then they must be. I love my old clear interior Luddies from this period but all that I have seen have a dark ring. Yours are suppose to be the best of the best so I will keep looking!
