Vintage George Way in the studio... Last viewed: 19 minutes ago

I recently recorded a number of drum tracks for a new project I'm working on. I decided to bring the vintage GW set out to hear what it sounds like under mics. I'm happy to report that they performed beautifully. The bass drum sounded especially good. I left both calf heads on the bass drum. Normally when I use calf on bass drums I will use a reso calf and a coated Powerstroke 3 on the batter side.

We changed things up throughout the day, moving some room and overhead mics around and I swapped snare drums a few times. I'll usually bring a minimum of 4 snares to a session. On this session two snares took care of most of the work . A 6.5"X15" 2 piece brass Ludwig 6 lugger (I think its a 30's era) and my orange peel Acrolite. The Acro sounds particularly great. I almost sold that drum a few years back, that was before I recorded it. It has Imperial lugs on it . I'm 99.9% sure it came out of the factory dressed like that, but regardless, that drum really shines and I wont go to a session without it.

I'd love to know when my GW set was produced. I believe late 50's, maybe 59? All the drums have lugs with the plugs on the end.., No stamps....Any help in that department would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you could get a shot of the badge that may help with the year they were produced.

18 Kits & 40+ snares..
Not a Guru, just addicted to drums

The badge will tell you nothing. From flyers and catalogs we can make an educated guess that George Way produced drum sets from late 1958 - around August 1961. If the lugs have plugs on one end they are most likely 1958-60. If they don't they are late 1960-61.

Either WAY you are talking about 4 possible years that it could have been made. That's a pretty small window.

1957 George Way BDP 26" concert bass drum
1959 George Way BDP 22/12/16 w/ 5.5x14
1959 George Way Green Sparkle 22/12/16 w/5.5x14
1961 George Way Blue Sparkle 20/12/15
1961 George Way Jelly Bean 20/12/14 w/4.5x14
1960’s Camco Oaklawn Champagne 20/12/14/16w/5x14
1971-73 Camco Chanute Walnut 24/14/18 w/5x14 COB

Thanks, yes, the lugs have the plugs... so I guess we're down to a two year window.

In that 4 year run, when did he switch from 3 to 4 plies? Or perhaps it was the other way around?

Thanks.

Same time frame as the lugs. According to the last catalog produced in 1961 there were several changes and additions. Lugs made for toms, bass drums and snares that had double rows of lugs (no more plugs). Switch from 3 to 4 ply shell. 20" bass drums 14" floor toms ( So far I have the only one I know of). Tuxedo lugs, Waybest strainers and many more items.

I'm sure many of these were introduced in 1960 before the catalog came out.

Excellent information Stephen. It helps me date my Geo Way kit as well. I've got a couple of cool pieces, but my Geo Way kit is my current favorite.

Awesome looking kit SC, thanks for sharing them. You didn't waste any time making them earn their keep. :)

The Coles are mine. I take them along to most of sessions that I do.

The 57 is on the batter side of the bass drum for some attack.
