vintage gear at pawn shops: hit and miss Last viewed: 13 hours ago

I went to the local pawn shop to see if they still had this flat base spur lok hihat stand that i was thinking of buying. there's something to be said for actually handling something instead of looking at microscopic pictures on ebay or C/L but this thing seemed kinda expensive.

At 135.00 for a worn stand, no clutch, no rubber feet, broken rubber cup and a possible linkage repair, it seemed like a bit much, especially at a pawn shop in the ghetto, (somebody has been on ebay) screw it to pricey.

As im about to leave, I see a snare hard case, beat to crap, black vinyl coming off " Ludwig Drum co." onthe side, inside 5x14 blue sparkle, six, no wait, eight lugs! baseball bat muffler, in white, classic p87 throw off, too light to be COB hoops, six digit serial number, JAN 5 1967 stamped inside! and a WFL flat base stand in the case.

price tag $125.00...

... got it for 107.75.

question is how in the H E double hockey sticks can they know markent value on a 1964 flat base hihat stand, and then miss the boat on what is like THE gold standard in wooden snare drums?!?

Imean it is a p87 not a catalog "jazz festival" but still, wow.

now i have a '61 5 1/2x14 and a '67 5x14.

U got 1 heck of a great deal.I just picked up a 10-lug Slingerland COB Sound King about 2 hours ago for $60 so we both faired nice today. I search pawn shop's frequently and I come to one conclusion concerning drum stuff.Either the stuff is a real steal or grossly overpriced.

Again, congrats on you find today.I bet you already forgot about that Spur-lok,did'nt you?

yeah, but now I gotta watch myself cuz i'll be skulking around second hand stores and yard sales looking for that next fix.

btw awesome find, cob ten lug slingy!

thats the thing usually every body asumes ludwig is worth something even if its broken crap, usually shops are less in the know with slingerland, leedy, rogers ect, I once bought a 1981 gretsch rosewood finnish 12,13,16,22 shell set for 300 bucks in this same shop. go figure.

Very nice find. It seems with pawn shops or second hand stores they really don't care about drums and see them as something taking up space. It's sometimes easier for them to price newer drums/sets because they can't find much information on older drums. I got a late 70's aluminum Slingerland student model snare with all orginal parts for $70 because they didn't know what it was.

Ya' see, slingerland gold! I agree about the space issue, I've been seeing big pearl and Tama double bass sets going for $299. It's definately not a sellers market.
