Vintage drum consignment CT and Tri state area.....

I'm just looking for some feedback please. I'd like to hear the good and bad from those who have bought and sold drums (vintage or high end used) on consignment. And also anyone who's owned a music store in the past. Any words of wisdom would be great. This would be through a store front location. Which features all types of mainly vintage and some high end gear for sale. With full repairs and restoration services as well. Hearing from those that have been there and done that would be great. There's a lot more to it but not really on topic for a vintage drum forum. Just looking for feedback from those who have done this currently or the past. Hope this is not out of line. Tommy if it is..... just make this go "poof". Thank you. :D

Glenn!

'Tis fine! That's why we have a "General" category!, and... sure it's about drums in general. Let's see what you find!

Glenn on the bad side drums take alot of space. If they sit for a long time frame then they become cost prohibitive, If they move quickly then it's a plus. I had a good friend that did it for awhile in his store, He had high foot traffic, but somethings just sat there.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Tommy thank you Sir.

And Mark thank you also. All part of the big picture we need to know! Space is always a concern. Great point.

Glenn - I'm not sure I understand your question, but when I had my music store consignments were handled like any other item for sale. I had customers sign a 90 day agreement and I got a percentage of the sale. If the item didn't sell in 90 days they would have the option of renewing for another 90 days, or they could take their stuff back.

Understand that when selling through a retail outfit the mark-up that they add will price your item at full-on retail. Price can affect how fast something sells. Make sure your drums don't end up in a window, or exposed to direct sunlight. You don't want your drums out on the floor where every looky-loo can touch and tap them. Lots to consider when going the consignment route. Just make sure you know who you are dealing with and that you have a written agreement that clearly states the conditions/rules of the consignment for both parties. Protect your investment and your equipment.

John was there a flat rate percentage you used? Or did it vary? Like 5% (just an example) no matter if it's a $500 item or $5000 item? 90 days is what I was thinking too. Seems like a good timeframe.

Glenn - Make sure it's all on paper... whatever the agreement is ie; percentage to dealer, sell-by time frame, etc. Then it's real important to find out how and where your items will be displayed. As I said earlier, you don't want your drums to end up in a window, or exposed to direct sunlight. You don't want them out on the sales floor either, you'd be shocked at how much wear and tear an instrument takes when it's out on the floor in a music store. Every wahoo that walks past past them feels compelled to hit, or touch them. Stacked behind a counter, or in a protected area and you're good to go. If any of those conditions exist, rethink the consignment idea. What good will it do you if the drums don't sell right away and you get them back in worse condition than when they left? Make sure all conditions favor -you-.

John

PS - I just wanted to add: selling on consignment is a completely legitimate way to sell (whatever.) You just have to be proactive on behalf of protecting your investment. Contracts/written agreements are a wonderful thing. Good luck with your sale! J

Thank you John. The consignment part will be just a small part of what's going on. Just as a option/courtesy for some customers if needed. And to make a few bucks too. Yes for sure things will be tucked away from tapping hands for safe keeping. Items will be photographed and documented with contracts for everything. Excellent advice thank you! This is all a ways off but we are just starting to plan things and the best way to proceed. I'll be a small part of the big picture. But involved none the less. Once things are in place I can tell a bit more. As there might be some interest.

Thanks!

I have set-up/started a business, I know what it takes. If I can be of any help at all, just let me know. Whatever experience I have is at your disposal...
