Vintage Crown Snare

Loading...

I have this beautiful vintage Crown snare and after some research have deduced that it is from '65-'68 either Star or Pearl made (would love to be able to figure that one out) and was just looking for some sort of valuation. Beautiful snare! My first kit was a Crown 12/14/20 and snare of this vintage in Blue Marine Pearl. Those badges are rare (you more typically see the script). Mine was from 1965 if that's helpful. No idea of value though while I still have the toms and bass, the snare disappeared long ago and never sounded any good. But I wish I still had it! Cool!!!

That's worth $7.80 - I'll take it ;)

Seriously though......search out the Ebay completed as well as the forums (could have been sold between member and member). If you can't find any, your only choice is to average MIJ snares with that type if strainer. Sometimes the market at that moment can determine value, as with anything. However, while many WMP MIJ snares can be found, someone may be looking specifically for one that is a Crown - to complete their kit (perhaps the kit they had as a kid). In this case, it would be worth more to that type of buyer at that moment, particularly if it is rare that they pop up. Sorry for my spewing of marketing common sense. It's just that alot depends on the particular buyer at that moment. You can price higher and always come down, but it is much more difficult (impossible really) to list it low and go up. That said, I would never advise someone to price a wood MIJ snare like this any higher than $100. If you do, prepare to sit on it for a very long time. There are several cases in point (example snares) to be found out there with cobwebs on their Ebay auction page.

If it has re-rings, it is from 1967 or earlier. If it has the thicker shells and no re-rings, it is from 1968 or later. This is a rough dating - as all we know is that somewhere in 1967-68 both Pearl and Star made the transition from the thin (w/rings) to the thick shells with no rings. IIRC, Crown was made by Pearl.

Just please do no use steel wool to clean it up. Dawn/H2O bath (for 24-48 hrs), brush up with toothbrush, and then a chrome polish ($3 Turtle-wax green bottle) with micro-fiber cloth.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
