Very strange occurance happened to me...

This is going to sound strange but I thought I'd post this to check with other drummers if it has happened to anyone else.

Last night I was practicing and quite suddenly I couldn't operate my kick pedal/foot like I'm use to do doing. I couldn't double stroke the pedal to save my life. Thought maybe the pedal screwed up so I spent an hour messing with it. Switched the pedal out with 2 other pedals and was having the same issue, so it wasn't the equipment.

No drugs or booze involved either.

It just seems very odd that it came on suddenly while practicing so maybe fatigue. Tried the kick drum this morning and still the same thing.

Was having some neck pain this weekend so another thought is a pinched nerve but I have no tingling and my left foot and hands are not affected either, thank god!

Anyway, that's my sob story but thought I'd ping it off the forum to see if anyone else has ever experienced this sort of phenomena Eye Ball

See your family physician. You need a 'professional' diagnosis. Could be muscular, nerve, brain related. Only a doctor can tell you which. I wouldn't ignore it though.

Too many great drums to list here!

Not sure if it's related to a pinched nerve, but are you having any other "non-drumming" symptoms like speech, fine motor skills or memory?

I'd get into the doctor, as soon as possible to get this figured out.

I'm in pretty good health otherwise and nothing speech wise.

Was just testing it out again and I'm about half way back to normal so I probably jumped the gun. Hoping it's just age related and maybe I over did it.

I'll definitely go to my DR if it lingers or doesn't improve.

Thanks for the comments and well wishes, suffice it to say I was besides myself last night, this morning and all day at work until I could get home and test again.

Thanks for being a soundboard guys! VDF is awesome! :)

I have had the same problem for years. For me it happens more frequently whenever I've gone about a week or more without playing. It only happens when I play heels up. I never have the problem when I play flat footed. I now switch back and forth when I have problems. If I'm gigging 2-3 times a week I don't have any problem. I have a lot of arthritis in my toes and ball of my foot. If I go to the doctor he just tells me I should quit playing. Ain't gonna happen!

had it to.in my case most probably fatigue combined with not having played for two weeks.

I think if your playing heal up you are going to get the the odd 'spasm' in your calf muscles, I usually play heal down, however when I'm playing with the loud guys- loud amplified stuff I've ' noticed that my foot is actually in a heal up position, if I am playing that way I'm not actually that aware of it!Eye Ball

Thanks for the update. Not knowing you or your health, I didn't want to jump straight to this and freak you out, but I'm posting this as a general awareness for everyone.

I just found it strange that, out of the blue, a drummer which has built up memory muscle and coordination over many years, suddenly loses that ability.

Hope everything is improving for you.

I play the double strokes heal up but 4 on the floor flat footed. I think it was all muscular/fatigue but I freaked as that has never happened before to me. I would hate to be in the middle of a gig and have this happen.

My wife also suggested stroke, possible too, haven't been out loony hiking for quite some time either as drumming has taken the front seat again of late :)

I have a rehearsal tonight with a big band so I hope my foot comes back to me in time...
