Urgent Help ti ID Ludwig Snare

Loading...

Hi there - I have an option for today (which renders it rather urgent) to buy this snare for what I think is a good price - the seller says its a Ludwig Classic Steel snare - was there ever such a thing or is this a SupraPhonic? Your valued input would be greatly appreciated. What would a fair price for such a drum be?

Drums: Ludwig / Star / Tama / Yamaha
Snares: Arai /Mapex / Ludwig / Slingerland / Star / Tama
Cymbals: Meinl / Paiste / Tosco / Wuhan /Zildjian / Zyn

Yes, this is a Supaphonic (from the '60's) & they are not made of steel, but of aluminium, except rare occasions of the elusive brass-shelled ones. Supra's generally sell on eBay between about $250 and $700, depending on age, condition & depth (the 6.5" deep ones generally sell for more) and are definitely not going down in price. I kept this response quite general as I'm sure others will chime in (and the vast majority will encourage you to buy it!).

1970 Ludwig Blue Oyster Super Classic
1977 Rogers Big R Londoner 5 ebony
1972/1978 Rogers Powertone/Big R mix ebony

BL -

Funkpoodle is spot on.

The badge on this puts it at late 1969 just before they transitioned to the blue and olive badge at the 750000 mark. This one seems to be in nice condition and not a lot of pitting. From the pictures there does appear to be some rust/oxidation on the tension rods and the snare throw but I am sure that they will clean up nicely and the shell should shine up nicely once taken part and cleaned. I would pick it up as a great snare and investment based on the photos, but not sure how much it is?

Looks like it will clean up nicely! Most 60's Supras have P83 strainers. But the 12 hole P85 is commonly seen on the '69 models. Supra prices have been down quite a bit for a little while now. Hopefully you can get a good deal on it. I'd want to be at 250-300 max on it if I was buying it for myself.

Hi there - thank you very much for the input guys. I've closed the deal at the equivalent of around $110, which I think is a great deal. It still has the original Ludwig heads on and the seller owned it since new. He used to play in various jazz bands in cape Town since the 1960's. He's an old guy now who stopped playing due to his age. What a lovely gentleman though. So, I can't wait .... and I'll make sure I post pics.

$110!!! Wow, that's less than $200 in Oz Dollars, and that, my Dear Sir, is an absolute bargain as far as I'm concerned. Good score!

BL,

You got this for a unbelievable price for its condition. Hopefully it came with some wonderful stories from the gentelman on its history and his playing days. Enjoy it!
