Just brought this as a display piece. I'm sure I've seen another similar like it, maybe on this site? Brass shell, 8 single tension lugs, calf heads, brass throw. Looks like a early 1900's snare of European origin. Hopefully one of you guys know something about it?
Unusual Old Snare Drum Last viewed: 53 minutes ago
Doesn't ring any kind of bell to me. measure the shell and see what you get. the continental drums were pretty consistent in not using inch sizes prior to 1955 , British are variable on that .I don't think I've ever seen a drum with the rods welded to the hoop.
I've seen one of these before (here, I'm sure), German or East European design methnks.
hey Mark, interesting snare. Where was that unearthed?
I think I've seen one here as well, tried to find it with search but no luck.
It's pretty cool – don't think it takes standard heads though.
Was just south of Auckland.
what size are those capnuts , that are used for tensioners? that might give you a clue as to the general area of mfg.
Looks like a cheapo snare from around the WW2 to me. Meant for Hitlerjugend, or Pioneers (socialist equivalent of HJ) or something like that, I'd say.
But it's just a wild guess.
