Unlined Plastic Hard Shell Cases

Help please

I recently had the opportunity to acquire a set of unlined plastic hard shell cases for cheap. Because they are unlined, I thought if I needed I could line them with towels to protect the drums, but the fit is too tight. Given your experience and knowledge, is the direct contact of the smooth plastic interiors of the cases with the lugs and hoops likely to eventually scuff the lugs and hoops?

Thanks!

John

Yes, my Ludwig Hollywood kit has been in hard, unlined cases since 1963 and there are light scratches on the corners of the lugs. I always try to put the toms in the cases with the mounting bracket toward the "bottom" side of the case (when you set it down by the handle) and bass with the bottom to the bottom of its case so most of the scratches are not visible when the kit is set up. You might try getting some light weight felt strips just wide enough and long enough to wrap around the drums before putting them in their cases.

I bought unlined cases years ago and had plenty of room to wrap towels around my drums. However, I got tired of doing that, so I bought headliner material and 3M auto interior adhesive and lined them myself. You can get headliner material or felt at a fabric store and the adhesive in a spray can at NAPA or any other parts house. It takes a while to do it right, but it's not hard. Measurements took the longest...I used a seamstresses measuring tape to find the circumference of the case before cutting the material.

How about putting them in t-shirts?

That's a good idea! I would recommend using new T-shirts, though. I used cut up old T-shirts as cymbal dividers once and they left some wild streaks on the cymbals. I was told by someone who is much more educated than I am that eventhough a garment has been washed, it will still have body chemicals left in the fabric...and soap residue.

A simple and effective solution for a tight fitting case would be to get some close nap indoor/outdoor carpeting, cut it to size and glue it in using 3M Super 77. I have typically purchased carpet like this at Home Depot. It is quite thin, is generally gray and has a linear pattern to it. The carpet is maybe a 1/4" thick so there should be plenty of room in just about any case for it. The Super 77 comes in a spray can and is really easy to use. It works like a champ.

If you have the room inside the case then I would suggest 1/2" charcoal foam. It will eventually tear up over time if there is no fabric covering over it, but it will do a great job of protecting your drums. Super 77 works just as well on the foam. Utilize a straight edge and an electric carving knife to cut the foam or pull out the table saw with a really fine blade.

Hope this helps.
