Kennyball,

First, we're a little out of the realm of "vintage" drums with this one, and more into primitive, tribal, or historic relic (if indeed it is actually a relic and not a modern reproduction). You've photographed the drum upside down, sitting on its head. The skin head appears to be secured with skin or gut string tied to a rawhide hoop wedged onto the bottom of the carved bowl or shell. Interesting piece.

Where did your wife buy this, and what was told to her about this drum that convinced her $600 was an appropriate price? I would think a museum curator specializing in primitive instruments could give you more information about this drum than you may get here on this forum, but who knows? Maybe one of our members is an expert in antiquities.

Personally, I couldn't tell if this drum was made last year by an Amazonian tribesman, or 2000 years ago by an Egyptian shepherd, or if it's worth $5000 or $20. Let us know what you find out about it.

Wow! Thank you so much for all your time and knowledge in your reply. I am the wife...lol ... anna-marie. I received the drum, a beater and two wooden african figural sculptures on the last day and at the last hour of an estate sale whereby the owner was worldl travelled and seemingly well off. I dont think the estate broker realized the tiny price tag off to the side of $595. Although its not my style i accepted the free gifts. I hadnt seen the price tag on it until i returned home. Does this shed a new light on this item as i am clueless about african (?) art.

Thank you so much again for your knowledge and detailed reply.

Seems like one of those expert appraisers like on Antiques Road Show would be your best bet. It may be old but if there's no demand for it...? Thanks for sharing.
