Univox drums Last viewed: 3 days ago
Hey Wayne,
I've got a 20" Univox bass that's pretty good with decent heads on it.

Great....whats it made of,where,s it from, how old is it?..what can you tell us about it?,,,can you show me the badge?Cool1
Hi Wayne,
Here's a pic of my Univox 20" bass. MIJ 70's I think with Pearl lugs and consollette. Looks like 5-ply with Mahogany outer and inner plies. Has a nicely done granitone interior paint. Two retractable straight spurs, black wrap. Not a bad MIJ, playable with good tone.

Hey, kellyj, are you sure that this isn't a Taiwanese drum? Do any of the parts, like the cymbal mount, the attachment on the tom rail, or the badge say Japan?
I'm not sure if many/any MIJ drums had that interior, and those lugs usually came on MIT drums if they weren't actually branded Pearl.
Could be. I haven't looked that closely at origin yet. I will let you know.
At one point Trixon was supplying a U.S. drum company with drums, being Either univox or Vox, Buddy Rich I believe endorsed them for awhile, and the name was sold to a Japanese concern, who changed the drums to MIJ style drums of the period, I saw one kit at a gig I did,it had Pearl 70's style lugs,Like KellyJ's and a Pearl modular tube dual tom holder like on the pearl exports, can't remember how the int's were treated. The wrap was one color, sort of a bronze, not real shiny, made me think early mid seventies, and they looked pretty sturdy, like a quality entry level kit.
They were not miced and sounded pretty good out front as I remember

There isn't much in there that is correct. Trixon drums and VOX drums were identical.Only the model names were mixed around. Trixon was being distributed by St. Louis Music and Trixon was also involved with a VOX(the famous , Irish guitar and amp maker) piano mfg. partner, Rippen: in the purchase of materials ,mainly because the Trixon plant in Shannon ,Ireland and Rippen were in the same building. So, the U.S. distributor of VOX, Thomas ,Organ Co. wanted to distribute Trixon drums under the VOX name. Trixon obliged ,likely in part to consolidate shipping. Theoretically,Trixon drums came out of the German plant and VOX came out of the Irish plant. There are pictures of Buddy Rich with both brands. They have nothing to do with Univox, which was a stencil, oriental drum. The name is latin for "One Voice" .
Here's a "Univox" set on CL in Oklahoma City...

If I remember correctly, when I was a kid Jenkins Music in Topeka Ks carried this "brand" of stencil kits. They sure seem familiar anyway.
