Trying to identify 70s Slingerland kit

The set was either the "new Rock" or "Modern Solo" outfit and then the stands and pedal were upgraded.

Both sets were 12, 13, 16, 22 with a chrome snare.

If the snare has 3 lines around the shell, it's brass...if there are no lines, it's probably steel.

Nice set, especially for the $ you paid.

Actually, the Modern Solo shipped with a 20 inch bass ... which would make more sense. But, that got upsized to the 22 for 76 and 77, at which time it was taken out of the cats.

The Rock Outfit (50N) would work for the sizes (20/12/13/16), but 78 was the last year of production.

This kit's numbers and plies put it about 1980.

You are most likely correct. It is probably a Rock Outfit 50N that was made about 1980. Good call, Rich.

I'm almost positive that is a 20 bass. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my cat. (may still do it anyway ... i'm hungry)

Thanks for all the help, everyone. Grabbed a few more detailed pics as well. Sorry, crappy lighting in there.

The bass, interestingly, has a serial number in the 470,000s with the rest of the badges in the 490s. I know the numbers were mixed up but I didn't realize there was that much of a spread in serials at a time.

Thanks a lot for the info. Here are some pics of the bass measurements. Please spare the cat though :)

It is odd that it's a 22" with only 8 lugs though, right? I can't seem to find a matching one in the catalogs.

Hi all! Not sure if it's too late, but I have info on this kit! It is the "Artist J5" outfit, which was cataloged in the 80's. The configuration is almost identical to either the Modern Solo and Rock 50N outfits. My kit was from approximately 1983. The shells are 3-ply with no rings. I'm attaching a picture of my kit. My bass drum, though, was a 5-ply, but all the toms were 3-ply with no rings. Just cruise on over to the Slingerland section by DrCJW and you'll find mention of these shells. Yes, the 22" bass drum had 8-lugs as a cost-saving measure. The serial numbers on my kit were around 470xxx. Hope this helps everyone!

Great job on that one. Had not even considered it would have been that. Man, kudos to you.

It was my pleasure nailing this one down! I need to start posting more. I have too much vintage drum knowledge stuffed in my 56 year old brain!

Thanks idrum4fun! They're twins. Seeing yours really makes me want to replace my missing hoops now.

Hi there, furiosd! Yes, they are twins! My J5 was very nice. I even had a single Setomatic arm, for those times when I wanted a 4 piece kit. I really loved the 5-ply bass drum with the 3-ply toms. As with the majority of my vintage kits, this one is long gone, too. If I only had a really large house to hold all those kits! Good luck to you, should you decide to get all the parts for it. To me, these were some of the last real Slingerland kits!
