Toy or not?

Loading...

I admit to being neither a drummer nor a collector, but my Google skills have failed me on trying to determine if this little drum I bought for the grandkids to play with is a toy, or something else. It's 7" across and 5" high, wooden and with some sort of skin(?) top tacked on. Marked Ludwig and appears to be old. Is this the right place to ask for ID assistance? Thanks for any info!

Might be older than the 50's. That's a calf skin head for sure. And I'm with RIMS N SKINS. Most likely a bongo style drum.

That Logo with the "Trade Mark" incorporated suggests between 1920's and 1930's ..

NOT a toy. It's an antique collector's item, and a musical instrument.

I did put it out of harm's way, suspecting as much. So no toddlers have played with it, at least at my house. How it ended up on the toy shelf at my local thrift store I guess we'll never know. :-)

Are there any traces of screw holes for mounting the drum, or evidence of it having had a skins on both sides at one time ?..

Cheers

No screw holes for sure, and I don't see anything that indicates anything was on the bottom. The edge is slightly rounded and seems worn uniformly with the rest of the wood.

It likely ended up there because some toy drums are very similar. Basic, no lugs, just a a head.
