Tom mounting options Last viewed: 3 hours ago

My 60's Luddy 22" has a rail mount and cymbal holder. When I use 1 rack tom it's great, but sometimes the gig requires more toms. I can't see any way to get a 12 and 13 mounted without drilling for a tom mount - something I'd rather not do. A drum rack is one option or a couple tom stands. What do you guys do?

In those cases,I would lose the bass drum mounted cymbal holder, and go to a floor stand and use a two way clamp and an L arm.You could also use both of your toms on the left side of the bass drum. One mounted on the rail, and one again mounted using a clamp and an L arm.

One way you can do this is say move the 13" tom all the way up the rail mount and move the "L" arm on the mount to the other side of the mount. Then you could used a snare stand on the 12" tom were the 13" tom was to start with....Mikey

This is a great reason to start collecting more drums. "Needing a second set" is the awesomest excuse ever.

Thanks guys for all the good points. I have too many drums as it is haha. I'm toying with the idea of a rack but just hate the look of them. It would allow me to switch out bass drums on sessions without moving any toms so I guess that's a plus. If I go the route of tom stands I may go with the new Luddy stands. I see they are offered in 9.5 and 10.5 L-arms. I guess for my 60s drums I need the smaller?

I missed this post earlier. If you don't want to spend the $$ on a full rack, just purchase a single horizontal bar and some clamps. Mount that to a pair of cymbals stands and for very little cash outlay you can get everything where you want it. You only sort of have the rack look as well. I have set up that way for several guys who like two tons but don't want the centered on the kick nor pushed way over to the left. There are certainly some set up positions you can achieve that way that you cannot any other way.
