To merge Ludwig Snares??

Loading...

Hey all. I am lucky to have a lovely 60's Ludwig 400 (485350) that sounds great. It has only the lightest of pitting. I bought it some 10 years ago for under £200. Now then, it came with a Brass top hoop that was battered, it literally had dents in it where a previous owner had rim-shotted the hell out of it and had lost it's shape so I swapped it out for a newer but still old Ludwig COS hoop. That sharpened the sound right up.

Ok now, fast forward to early last year and for the sake of interest I won a cheap-ish pre-serial Ludwig super COB on Ebay. The drum was actually in worse condition than I expected with it looking more beat up with an extra hole!!! Yep someone replaced the strainer for the later 70's luddy type. Most importantly I'm not so impressed with it's sound, it's fine at lower volume but it seems to really dry out when I give it some. I tried it on a session and it ruined a track because it lost it at the end when the song built up. I admit though that the Snares on this drum are quite cheap-ish and not lovely puresounds or similar.

So here is my question. Should I just flog the old goat, or strip it? My first idea is to swap out the lovely Brass hoops that is on the Super and put them on the Supra. What do you guys really think of that? Or am I missing something with this COB?

Anybody there?

Ok to rephrase the question, has anybody done this and is it something any of you guys would prescribe? Do 400's sound any better outfitted with brass hoops. I haven't tried it yet. The drums are waiting for the job to be done. Also what do you guys think of stripping the COB?

Cheers.

I think it is a bad idea. But then, I prefer that brass drum. Have you tried a very tight snare side head?

Cheers guys. I will try resetting the Brass drum. Maybe start again with a new strainer and snares. I'll try that tighter bottom head thing too.
