Tips on Ludwig Stand destruction? (Not what it sounds like......)

Loading...

Hello,

I came across several vintage Ludwig stand bases for cheap, and they were cheap because they are missing various parts, or are rusty etc. Some of the stand bases are missing the piece at the top where the wing screw threads in and holds up the next section of the stand.

I have some other Ludwig bases that are broken or otherwise un-useable, however the top piece that I need is intact and functional. I have replaced loose top pieces like this before (with some JB Weld and a rubber mallet...that part is easy!) but how do you "coax" the top piece off an existing stand, especially if it's not loose? Did Ludwig affix them on with any adhesives or was it just a pressure fit?

Any tips on making the removal process easier without destryoing it? I wanted to get some expert opinions from the experts here, before I randomly started swinging hammers, chainsaws, wrecking balls etc! :p

Thanks!

They only knurled the tube to give it a better fit.

I have used a block of a hard wood like maple and hit it with a hammer to loosen the castings. You definitely don't want to use anything metal directly against the castings.

If it is really stubborn you can take a piece of maple that is a couple of inches thick and drill a hole in the center of it the same size as the tube. Then cut it in half so you can fit it around the tube. Then screw the two halves back together and you can bang on the wood and it will distribute the load very evenly. You want to work your way around the casting so it comes off evenly.

thin shell is correct...I just did one like that to shorten it for a 10X14 tom.

Thanks.

thin shell, when you say you hit it with a block of wood, do you hit on the top (where the next stand section would go) or do you hit it somewhere else?

I'm not very handy at all, so could you simplfy things for me, like "working my way around the casting"?

Sorry, but I am not mechanically inclined at all. I need the remedial training class.

Thanks.
