Thoughts on this eBay Slingerland kit Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I feel I'm up to date on what the majority of vintage drum kits sell for. This one caught my eye on eBay. I'm holding off on my thoughts, but would like to hear from everyone on their thoughts on what the buyer is asking for this! Here's the link...

That is definitely a drool worthy set for a Slingerland lover. I am such a Slingy fancier. But, no matter how pristine the drums are, that "outfit" is overpriced in the seller's mind by about $7500 to $8000. I can see up to $2000 value including all that he lists as part of the set. Jim Petty is a friend of mine for over thirty years. I don't think that Jim has gone crazy enough to actually tell someone that a beautiful non celebrity owned Slingerland four piece set with the add-ons mentioned is worth almost five times the real world value.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

vintagemore2000, leedybdp! I echo both your sentiments! This is most certainly one of the cleanest Slingerland kits I've seen, but really feel that the seller must be smoking something!

I've know Jim Petty for some years now and just tried giving him a call, both to see about this kit and also to see how he's been feeling. Jim's also repairing the top section of my Rogers Giant snare stand. Just wanted to see if he remembers this kit and why he would say it's worth so much.

Update: just spoke with Jim. He's on the phone with another customer and will call me back shortly. Stay tuned!

leedybdp, vintagemore2000! Just had a nice long conversation with Jim! As always, Jim uses very colorful language! You wouldn't believe the number of 4 letter words coming out of his mouth when I told him of the Slingerland kit! LoLoLoLo

Jim doesn't specifically remember this kit, but echoes leedybdp's thoughts about what he would have said the kit was worth. That, plus Jim says that he has plenty of experience estimating the value of kits without having to bring in someone else to do that. Jim's bottom line is that this seller will be taking allot of flack from people about this kit. Since I'm local to the seller, I just may give him a call and get some more info. I'll update everyone as necessary!

I mentioned this forum to the seller and received a response back and offer it here, completely unedited...

"I read through the thread. Always interesting to read Internet commentary.

I bought this kit almost 8 years ago and it was sent directly to Jim before I even saw it. As Jim sees a lot of kits I can only imagine he might not remember this one right off the bat, but perhaps if you remind him that he said it was the cleanest vintage kit he had ever seen and nothing needed to be done with it, barring wiping out the dust and replacing the heads, it might jog his memory. A friend of his recreated the original Slingerland logo on the new front kick drum head and Jim informed me that he discussed the potential value of the kit, not including the vintage cymbals or the hardware, with this gentleman. I do not know his friend's name.

Not sure what Jim's telling you but as he didn't remember the kit I can only assume he doesn't remember telling me the value he estimated all those years ago. I only dealt with Jim on this one occasion but I do remember some great conversations. He's incredibly knowledgeable.

I've already been offered $4500 for the kit and I turned the buyer down. You might think that's crazy but I know what a collector's piece this is, especially with everything I'm including. Someone will buy it eventually and I'm certainly in no rush to sell it. When the right buyer is ready to make a move they will be very happy knowing what an amazing investment they made. I can only imagine the value after another 10 or 20 years has passed".
