Thoughts on the Jazz Fest on eBay

I just want to weigh in here since I have done a few re-wraps recently and have had many come through my hands as well. I am fairly certain from looking at the picture that this is the original wrap to the drum for 2 reasons.

1. I blew the pictures way up and looked at the photo of the bottom of the drum so I could see the grommet on the vent hole. There is no visible nicks or scaring on the inside of the shell that usually come with trying to remove the old grommets to get the badge of. Is it possible someone removed it and then sanded the inside of the shell to remedy that? Yes, but in my experience that is generally not the case. The inside of the shell has coloration to it that I would not associate with an interior that has been refinished.

2. Also looking at the closeups of the of the seem of the wrap, the seems sits right at the edge of the lug and I have seen that a lot on some older kits and I have also seen many kits where the seem sits in the middle of the lug. Putting the seam where it is in the photo just makes sense so that the lug will sit flat on the wrap. The wrap is also very thin, I have seen many different color wrap samples that have come my way recently and the modern wraps being offered by all of the online supply houses are much thicker than the wraps that were used years ago. The seem on this drum looks much too thin to be a modern re-wrap and if it were a re-wrap with current wraps then that seem would be noticeably thicker.

Just my :2Cents:, hope it helps. I will let everyone else debate proper tension rods and hoops etc.

Hey John! I'm taking all opinions! I do agree that the drum is very clean. I just wish I could pull this drum apart and look at ALL the details! Mark

I don't blame you one bit, my brother... I get real nervous about spending hundreds of dollars on instruments I've only seen photos of. More often than not, crappy photos. And you're right, at that price point, everything on the drum should be original. (with the exception of the heads or snare wires maybe.)

Tough buying on-line, sometimes you just have to pull the trigger and cross your fingers. Any chance of getting him down from cloud nine on the price? The J-fest I acquired a couple of weeks ago had a $650 Buy It Now, a friend of mine, negotiating on my behalf, got him down to a much more reasonable $500. Maybe something can be worked out with the seller. Worth a try if you really want the drum.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Your points are well taken and I've no doubt that we all would not have thought to blow up the pictures for a better look at the wrap! Still, just because it's original(?) Oyster Black, does that mean it's worth the asking price when all the other hardware is not original? That's my :2Cents:!

I went to Gerry's place today. The drum looks original (but the mentioned hoop and T.O.). Its in amazing shape. Ive never seen that wrap before. Needless to say: A rare drum indeed.

Thanks for doing the detective work on this! Did you tell Gerry of all the hoopla this drum was getting on the forum?!!

Thanks again for relieving everyone's mind on this! Still, for the price, I think it should have all original parts. Yeah, I'm nitpicking! LoLoLoLo
