Thoughts on the Jazz Fest on eBay Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Happy Holidays everyone!

Too much food and not enough sleep during the holidays... now it's time to check out vintage drums!

I saw this Jazz Festival on eBay I have my doubts as to originality. The wrap just doesn't look original to me and I can tell that the strainer and butt certainly are not! Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281042488078&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

Everyone's thoughts on this are greatly appreciated!

66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

looks very much like the wrap sold by Precision today as "black oyster pearl".

Definately does not look like original Ludwig wrap, certainly not bowling ball.

I believe he would know if it was a rewrap though.....

Hi guys!

So far, your thoughts echo what I know... Gerry has always sold good items and normally knows what he has... if even a bit overpriced!

VDB, if you can check out the drum, that would certainly lay to rest any uncertainty.

Still, I can tell that the strainer has been pieced together from two different parts. The square block that the snare tension rod passes through is NOT of the time period. The drop gate would have 12 holes, not 2. Also, if you look closely at the butt, it appears that the tightening screws are the newer phillips head variety. As pointed out by drumfactory, the wrap does look like the newer 60's Black Oyster repro. Gerry says the grommet is too perfect to have been removed. All you need are the proper tools to removed the old grommet and install a new one. Finally, the overlap seam is not how Ludwig would have done it in the 60's... or 70's... in about the middle of a lug, not protruding a quarter inch past it! As to the strainer and butt, they would have been the version that was raised 1/2" above the shell, not 7/8". And, correct me if I'm wrong, but the strainer would still be a P-83, with either a script or block logo.

Also, the bottom hoop is not a Ludwig. The tension rods certainly are not period correct!

As to the shell being a 5.5"... I doubt there were any of this depth in clear maple. All the 5.5" deep shells were pretty much used up by the mid-60's. Is it POSSIBLE the shell is a 5.5"? Maybe... but not likely!

Remember, it's all in the details!

That's my :2Cents: on this drum. My gut tells me it's a late 60's shell that was re-wrapped really well with modern 60's Oyster Black Pearl.

I eagerly await the final outcome of this!

The seam of the wrap is in an unusual location I think.

Otherwise, there was a transition period between the 60's OBP and the "bowling ball" OBP where the wrap looked like this.

Very interesting drum.

I, too, have seen this "transition" Oyster wrap. Not really original 60's, but not truly "bowling ball" either!

Mike,

Thanks for pointing this out. I've got ALLOT of pictures of Jazz Festival snare drums and can't find a single one that has the overlap well past the lug. That doesn't mean it didn't happen. We're talking real live people who were assembling these drums!

I just really want to find out what is, and isn't, original on this particular Jazz Festival snare drum!
