Thoughts on lug size for 12" tom Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hi all!

Well, I'm "thinking" about adding another kit to my collection. I'm having a tough time finding a nice used Ludwig Hollywood/Big Beat kit, so I may consider obtaining a new Classic Maple from Ludwig, or having the kit custom built, as I have most of the hardware.

Hollywood/Big Beat kits consist of 8x12, 9x13, 16x16 and 14x22.

My question; what size Classic lugs do most of you favor for the 8x12 tom? Large Classic or Mini Classic?

The majority of 60's and 70's 12" toms come with the Mini Classic, but I've still seen lots of these toms with Large Classic lugs.

Thanks!

Mark

i do like things to match and be the same. but i think the smaller lugs look better on the 12's.

I think the mini classics only if you are trying to recreate a 60's vibe. If you are ordering classics and not 3ply re ring shells. Go for the large lugs.

Take a look at Steve maxwells vintage 60's "new" sets. He orders them with out lug gaskets, classic Tom mounts and floortom legs and even puts "gull wing" spurs and consolettes on the bass drum.

I'm sure you could order your Hollywood the same way but with a classic double Tom mount.

I was considering ordering a blue note like this, two virgin 14x22" 12,13,16,18" toms a jazz festival and a canister throne. ( I'd skip the bongos)

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear
1981 Gretsch SSB Gran Prix Rosewood
1987 Yamaha Turbo Tour Custom Mellow Yellow
1991 Pearl Export Ferrari Red

mlayton and clubdate64!

Thanks for your input! Not yet sure what size lug I'll use. Seems that Ludwig was the only one who did this. Same size lugs used by Gretsch, Rogers and Slingerland for both 12" and 13" toms, which do tend to look better when the toms are side-by-side in a dual-tom configuration.

So did Ludwig when they made Jazzettes. But they went with mixed depending on size. The 12" get small, 14" and 18" get large. I think it looks "balanced" but then I look at it all the time.

I believe after they went 6 ply some Jazzettes did have large lugs on the 12". I've certainly seen a few of these. Note if you add a 13" in the mix I don't think that the large lugs look so "balanced" when you have a 12" with small lugs sitting right next to it. In that case I'd go small 12" and 13", and large for the FT and bass, but I part company with Ludwig on that one.
