I came home to find this waiting for me today. I've been excited about this one as i wasn't sure what the condition was like. Turns out to be pretty good and the price was very reasonable.

Also waiting for me tonight was another box containing a Ludwig standard snare bought off ebay for a very reasonable price, less than many are listing their P83 strainers at on their own. I figured I'd swap the P83 from the standard with the P85 from the Supra. Then I'll still have a good Standard. Then it's hoops, T-rods and a BB muffler. And some dent removal. The shell is almost pit free and just some small dents on the very edges (but not on the bearing edges) and behind the throw. It has a date stamp of Oct 19__ but the serial number suggests it's 1968. There is also an AG or A6 ink stamp. Anyone know what that signifies?

As finding genuine hoops will be impossible here and expensive shipping from the States, how do people feel about using good generic hoops? Frowned upon? And does anyone have a BB muffler that's itching to find a new home?

I'll be sure to post photos of it whan it's done. It's going to come up really nice.

OK, answering my own question here. After sniffing around the site I understand the AG stands for Anti-galvanic? Also, looking more closely at the muffler holes shows this drum would've have a round knob muffler. Being 1968 would it have had a P83 or P85? Or could it have been either. The one on the drum is definitely not original.

Great, good to know. If only the Standard's muffler knob was the right size.

Thanks

The P83 from the Standard snare may have a different Ludwig logo on it than would have been on a 1968 Supra. The Standard normally had a block logo while the Supra would have a script logo. Script logo P83s were sometimes used on Standards, so you may have the "correct" one for the Supra.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

I hadn't noticed that but you are right. Ah well, it'll have to do for now at least. Thanks

Here she is all cleaned up. The P83 is off a Ludwig Standard snare and as KCdrumdad pointed out, it has the later logo embossed on it. Still, it looks better than the silver P85 that it had. The rims are generic replacements but do the trick and the muffler knob came from a Blackro which is now sporting a small Acro knob.

I'm quite pleased with this drum. It was one of those 'right time, right place' eBay purchases and was pretty cheap. It's not perfect - had to ease out some dents behind the throw and the reso side extreme inside edge is a bit wavy but the actual bearing edge is fine. But it's the lack, or near lack of pitting on the shell that's particularly pleasing. Now to go and play itguitar3
