The Basic Paradiddle In The Hands Of A Master

It's so great that Jim left these videos behind for future generations. Great drummer and one of the best teachers around. There are more Chapin videos to be had. I highly recommend viewing by drummers of any level of proficiency. Thanks for posting that one.

This is one great thread!...thanks John, really enjoying this. You guys need to check out Dave Weckle's "Back to Basics" DVD's...it is really great. Also check out Steve Smith's stuff, probably the best high profile teacher out there. Remember Bernard saying that the people he respected most in the world were the teachers...I agree!

That's why I picked paradiddles. One of the most fun patterns to play on a kit. I always get a kick out of showing someone how to play paradiddles on a pad and just when I see that, "ok, I get it, but this is boring" look come over their faces. I take them to the kit and show them what you can do with them. The 'bored look' quickly goes away and their mouth drops open and their eyes open wide. They always walk away motivated to learn/practice paradiddles.

It really is amazing how many things you can do by sticking to that simple RLRR LRLL sticking pattern. Single, double and triple paradiddles are killer when you throw them on the kit. I use them in fills a lot. Great trick to have in your bag.

It has helped every drummer that ever picked up a set of sticks... and more accurate would be; Steve Gadd has done a lot for the paradiddle! (Now you can chuckle...)

And before you laugh at Gadd... go back to page one of this thread, try the linear groove Steve created. Get back to me and tell me how long it takes you to be able to reproduce it at tempo. Steve spits those out like it's easy. Not quite so easy to follow in his footsteps if you're trying to get it under your own hands. The man is a gifted drummer. Less 'LOL' and a little more respect when it comes to Gadd's drumming please. He's -earned- it, especially from other drummers who know how hard it is to play that stuff.

I don't speak for Mr. Fungus, but I really don't believe he meant ANY disrespect to Gadd...

I didn't take it that way, bunny. I do have a ton of respect for Gadd though, and I couldn't figure out (because of the 'Laughing Out Loud' tagger at the end) where he was coming from. No foul, no harm. It - is- a good thread. Hope more people comment and contribute to it.

I guess I am just in constant defense mode, John. Not that you have ever commented negatively on one of my threads...

Since we're brothers from different mothers, I would guess that Mr. fungus was merely laughing that the paradiddles were so indicative of Gadd's playing!!! I would have said chuckles, but lots of laughter is good, too...

We're kool, bunny.

I'm 'generally' a peaceful guy. I'm in the habit of avoiding mud-puddles when I encounter them. I'd rather walk -around- them than -through- them!

Peace,

John
