That Motown Sound

Loading...

From vintagemore2000

Man to my ears and with all due respect, this sounds nothing like what was coming out of Motown. Nice playing and all, but not even close.

To my ears and IMO, the Motown guys tuned like jazz drummers, they more or less were coming from that mindset anyway. It was a combination of open jazz tuning and obviously, the room, mics, mic pres, and drummers touch.

Quote from Uriel worth to mention:

"That’s why a lot of times I hate to see a drummer as the leader of a band. Because they stand out more than any other musician there, and they’re not supposed to. The drummer, I always figure, is supposed to accompany the other musicians. Most young drummers don’t realize that until they get older."

Apparently he wasn't familiar with Tony Williams or Buddy Rich.

Paper Lace and Phil Collins will differ on this opinion.

I guess that's a question for the OP, but I was referring to 59-mid 60's... Perhaps I should have been more clear, but I thought the era I was referring to was obvious by the description of drum sound I mentioned....

I was also referring to that period and even up to later 60s on stuff like marvin ***e and tammi terrell albums. To my ears the sound didnt change a hell of a lot, if at all in that time.

Yes, I agree. The overall sound of a record may have changed a bit due to production value during that era ,but generally speaking, the drum sounds pretty much stayed the same. Benny and then Uriel were heavily influenced by big band/jazz guys.. . It was a time of transition and you can definitely hear that in the acoustic drum sounds.

OK I think I know what you mean now. And you`re right about transition, throughout the sixties Drums went from three ply to five or six and Remo was making plastic heads which most went from calf to plastic. Those two will change the sound of the drum for sure. Also I think Motown was a "groove"(lots of clapping) and had a lot to do with the hands and wrist.
