Tama Imperialstar Help

Loading...

Got my hands on an old imperialstar. Great sizes (24,18,14). Zola coated inside. I'm not a fan of the wrap and want to strip it and do a natural wood stain, but I hear the luan underneath is complete garbage. Anyone have an experience with this or any advice?

Well take the wrap off and see what's underneath. But I'd just re-wrap it either way if you're not happy with the current wrap.

yup the shells are not made out of a wood that you would want to try and stain. rewrapping is a good option as the y are actually good sounding drums.

The drums are made of Luan (sometimes called Philippine Mahogany but is not at all related to quality Mahogany hardwoods from Africa, etc.). Luan is rather soft, spongy and open grain and will probably splinter a fair amount if you remove the original wrap. It does not look very good when you try to stain it but can be rewrapped or wood veneered with success. I've owned vintage Imperialstars and (as louse said) they are good sounding drums - especially the 22" kick.
