Agreed. Not the same, but similar.
Once you power up the device, it will be pretty simple to use. I don't recall now but it probably has a single oscillator and a noise generator with various modifications for both. Oscillators produced sustained "musical" tones in various waveforms with the sine wave being the most common. A sine wave with a portamento pitch bend is the typical "Syndrum" sound as heard on "Reminiscing" and "Rock and Roll Fantasy". I believe Pollard's Syndrum had a more musical sounding oscillator, but the Synare will produce that effect as well. The noise generator will produce synthetic snares, thunder, and other staccato or sustained white noise effects.
Basically start twiddling knobs and you will figure it out rather quickly. You won't break it and there are no self destruct settings.
