Sunset Satin Flame Gretsch

THROW-BACK THURSDAY!

I received this photo earlier this week from a long-lost bandmate. It's not only the only photo that I know to exist of me playing these drums with a band - it's the only photo I know of that shows me playing in a band. I did play in at least 5 different groups from 1969 to 1976. We didn't take pictures back in the day and I quit playing from 76 until 2007.

This gig was at Cliff Park in Haney B.C. Canada in 1970 or 71 and I have no idea who took the photo. There were two or three other bands on the bill that day. One was PAX - a very good rock band from Haney also, and another local band.

I bought the drums new in 1969 - Gretsch Rock n Roll Series. They came with two same-sized rack toms. I bought these Round Badged drums in late summer and it was only a few years ago that I learnt it was around that time Gretsch was switching to the Stop Sign badge (SSB). I sold these drums in 1976.

It was a nice surprise to receive this photo from a former bandmate guitar player (on the far right in the photo) that I haven't seen since about 1971.

Well.....there are at least two sickos here. I also liked that wrap. Walberg & Auge acquired the shells from Gretsch, and l was informed that they called the wrap Salmon Satin Flame. Someone bought these drums new in the mid 1960's. I bought them used many years after that. After several years of owning these great drums, I finally decided to re-wrap them in a custom made Duco lacquer simulation of forest green and silver.

Ya - those Duco finished drums are nice! Great colour choice.

When I bought my drums in 69 I had no idea what the catalog name for the finish was - I always called it Pink Satin Flame. A few years ago one of the Gretsch experts out there told me it was Sunset Satin Flame. Now I have the Gretsch Drum Book (Rob Cook 2013) and in there is a few lines about this wrap. From the book: Sunset Satin Flame was offered from 68 to 70. Some collectors refer to it as Salmon Satin Flame. The wrap was re-introduced in 1992 and called Pink Satin Flame. Funny that is was what I always called it from the get-go haha. I used to take some ribbing back then about 'playing pink drums' never bothered me though - I always liked em....under the lights they are killer. I found these on eBay a few years ago....1968 Sunset Satin Flame 20/12/12/16 (no snare). I paid a lot for them..........sentimental money.......

Since this photo I bought the double tom hanger to go with this set.

Good for you. If mine had not been so scratched up and had so many finish cracks, I would have left them alone. But, since I had no intention of selling them or being concerned about resale value, I figured what the hell. I found a web site for Bum Wraps. They do a great job that is fast and relatively inexpensive. I sent them a high resolution picture of a vintage WFL snare drum in this Duco finish. Within a day, they had replicated the colors on their computer so that they could apply it to a high grade of vinyl cut to size for each drum. This drum set by Walberg and Auge has Rogers Beaver tail lugs. I have a couple of old Rogers snare drums wood shells and enough parts to make a complete snare drum. I'll ask Bum Wraps to make me the wrap for this drum.

Awesome photos. Yep, rock stars you were. I could have mistaken your band for Grand Funk Railroad..

What a good looking set of drums and a great story, Kona! Takes me back too! Those were some of the best times of my life!

Nice! I'm actually on the hunt for a set in this finish at the moment. Preferably in the jazz sizes but I'll take the 16 FT to save money. I see the Lightning strainer on the snare, so this was definitely during a transition period.

I love this color. I think this is probably my favorite Gretsch satin color then possibly olive satin flame. Your set looks great!

If you want an Olive Satin Flame Gretsch set, I know where there is one waiting for you at a music store in Houston. It's not mine. If you're interested, send me a message.
