Suggestions On Re-finishing A Gretsch Snare Last viewed: 15 hours ago

The other day I picked up this Gretsch Snare that needed some serious love. A couple holes to be filled and a hunt for some correct hardware. We deciphered that this was probably a late 50's early sixties 3 ply 8-lug model and Kona had suggested it may have originally been painted white since they offered that at the time according to the 58' Gretsch Catalog

Here is what the shell looks like after the first shot of Citra-Strip in picture one. I'm guessing Kona was probably right about the original laquer white but once I got the whole thing stripped down there were all these nasty vertical lines. Could that mean it was wrapped at one time?

I am curious because I want to figure out how to finish the restoration and would love to re-wrap if possible. But I know if these drums were never wrapped the heads might not fit. Thoughts or suggestions on re-finishing?

that is very typical of gretsch shells to have those vertical lines plies cracks etc! I think, gary is right I think it was Nitron white paint, You need to See how a drum head fits top and bottom now with the paint off before going any ****her with a possible re wrap.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

There seems to be a fair amount of play when I rest the head on the top or bottom of the drum. I actually have an inlay strip from another restoration...would wrapping that around the drum and trying to set the heads be a decent indicator of whether I could go the re-wrap route?... or are the wraps significantly thicker with glue and hi-bond tape etc...
