I picked up a 1951? Slingerland Radio King bass drum, rack tom and floor tom a couple of months ago. I'm now ready to clean it up and start using it on some gigs. I'm going to replace the original radio king calfskin heads. I'm wondering what is the proper way to store the old heads so that they don't warp out of shape. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pick up a junk, no name, Craiglist kit, in the same sizes, and "store" the heads on those drums!
The best way is; to store them at my house! LOL
I think storing them in either a cymbal bag with a few desiccant packs, or in old drum head boxes, again with desiccant packs added to keep them nice and dry.
Or, you can send them to my house! I'll take good care of them for you...

I read somewhere that one of the contemporary calf head providers ship their mounted heads in sealed plastic bags to avoid warping due to humidity conditions.
Perhaps that would be worth trying?

Store them low to the ground, and away from any heating units..........heat in general....
You can try those suggestions, they might work for you, but from my experience with calf heads, there is no way to store them where they won't warp or shrink to an unusable state. They need to be on a shell under loose tension.
Thanks for all the good info guys. I appreciate it very much. I just have to figure out what I want to do. You guys are super.

+1 Best/most practical suggestion of the lot.

I know I can do so on the 13" and 16" heads but the bass drum is a 24". Don't know if I can find a cheap one very easily. Thanks though and I'll figure something out. The heads are still on the drums, haven't received the new ones yet. Maybe I should just play them with the calf heads. I don't know how they would stand up or sound being over 60 years old.
may be just fine gerald. i probably wouldn't risk gigging with them, but some people do. but for practice or home/studio, they may be just the ticket.
