!st Ludwig kit Last viewed: 1 day ago

Just got these in the house and took some pics. These are my first set of Ludwig's and I am hoping that some of the Ludwig guys can help me out. Can you tell from the label what year these were built? and did they normally paint the edges? the floor has painted edges and the rack toms do not. Thanks, Tommy

Looks like you have a set of Ludwig Standards from 5/17/67. I have not seen

too many Standards in the gold sparkle finish. Looks to be complete and in

good shape, too. The shells that were using are the same as Ludwig used

for their regular line of products, just different lugs and hardware.

Enjoy!!!

I thought 68 was the first year for the standards? I have not found any info so far on the paper tags. I guess the serial numbers on the badges are useless. Thank you for the info>

I believe your label indicates a drum set made in 1971. I don't know how to exactly determine just what all the other numbers mean, but I think the last number might be a finish number. So, if that's the case, then the numbers might indicate May 6th, 1971) and the "7" might represent "gold mist" finish. The parallelogram logo on the paper tag is of the B/O badge era (even though your badges are Standard badges) so it couldn't possibly be from 1967.

Tommy - that's a sweet set of drums you picked up in a rare finish for Standards. That's 3-ply maple under the paint. Some guys think that the lighter hardware on those kits makes them more expressive/resonant drums. The only difference between the Standards and the high-end kits of the period is the hardware. That's a really great set of vintage drums. Enjoy.

BTW, that's a 70's logo on the BD but it looks like somebody might have stuck a logo onto an Evans head... not original.

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks John, I am going to tune and play them tomorrow. I am all "geeked" up about it, it has been along time since I have played some old Luddy shells. BTW what heads will make these baby`s sing?

Go old school... coated Ambassadors on top and lately I've grown real fond of the Evans ECII control heads on the reso side. I just like the tone and the way they tune up. Experiment! That's half the fun of getting a new kit, finding the right heads, the right sound etc. The good news is; you're working with a set of drums that will be responsive to your tweaks.

Play the crap out of em! That's going to be a fun kit to play.

Hi! Yep, you do indeed have a rare Ludwig Standard wrap! Great find! Those shells are the very same as the Classic's, just with the granite paint -vs- white. In fact, many of the early Standards have both white and granite painted interiors. One of my Standard rack tom's do.

I use old school top and bottom. And, there is a zillion ways to tune them, and they sound great in any of them.

You're going to like those!
