why do folks on ebay split up a vintage kit and sell them piecemeal? i think part of the fun of owning a vintage kit is imagining the story the kit could tell from all its years. once you break it up and sell it off as parts, you lose some of that mystique. do you really get more money that way?

Some people just don't have the same priorities that you or I have.
You can usually make more money that way. Even more money can be made if you part out each individual drum.
It's something I hate to see and wouldn't do myself but if you have ever bought a single drum or part on ebay (I have) you have probably benefited from the practice.

On the other hand,... I just bought this afternoon a near perfect Ludwig BDP 22" bass drum shell to replace my damaged one.
I've never split up a kit that wasn't already thrown together anyways. Only did it once with a "jellybean" sparkle kit that had badges all over the map...
