John~! Thanks for the vids the drums sound great. The jingle stick is very very cool. Good stuff buddy. And you know I have a soft spot for those Radio Kings too. Great to hear you play. You still got it~! So true about the younger mans clothes. Worst thing I did was to stop playing for some 30 years. I have not aged gracefully either. But I keep pluggin away. We are moving a bunch of stuff (and kids) around the house. Soon I'll have my own practice area and can keep my kit setup. That'll be a huge help for me. Anyway thanks for sharing the vids. Thanks for comments, all!

Glenn, what's the status of your RK kit resto? The Radio King is one of my favorite snares. You can tune that SOB nine ways from Sunday and it'll sound great every time. I don't like to tune them high because it dries them out, makes it sound too much like a lot of other drums. But when tuned in the low to high/mid ranges, it sings! It's just such a rich, full sounding drum. It goes great/fits right in with the Luddy Clubbies.
Steve B - They're a set of 50's club date shells that I got from, Eric (ec curtis) about 8 months, or so, ago. I was going to re-wrap them, but I opted for the veneer instead. I love natural wood finish kits. This one came out great thanks to Jeff's craftsmanship.

Hi John. The Rk's have been in a hold pattern. I still need to wrap the 20" floor tom and re wrap the 13". Precision will be doing the wrap job when I get the cash saved. I'm not very good at it. The 15" tom (old marcher shell) needs some misc holes plugged and the snare beds filled in. That I can do at Dans once it warms up a bit here. I play them as is for now. They just don't look very good. LOL.

Nice sounding drums John - good playing....fun stuff.

Just saw this thread John and that ain't bad sound for a camera mic, sounds good! Now everybody will know why it's so much fun to go to Purdie's place for some instruction. He always has a cool old set of drums in the corner and ready to go. Last couple times it's been these Club Dates but can also be the Merlot RB kit, the fiberglass shells or whatever he feels like playing.
I know I'm due for another visit but the New Orleans/ Stanton Moore suff you gave me is kicking my tail. I need a couple more weeks with that before I can move on. I'll be in touch.
Glenn - You wrote: and the snare beds filled in.
Honest, I don't know why guys feel the need, or bother to do that to marcher shells. Sure, better contact with the head, yadda, yadda, yadda. But think about it... what does a snare drum become when you pop the snares off?
A 'tom'!
A drum that sounds good right out of the gate, like your RK marcher, is going to sound real good whether you use it as a snare, or a tom. Do it if you must, but you really don't need to 'fill in snare beds' just to make the drum allegedly sound better. It's a Radio King... you'd have to take an axe to it to make it sound bad!
Mick - I'll post a short demo of the lick played up to speed. You already know the pattern. This was intended to be a demo of the mahogany kit. I don't want to take advantage of Tommy & Dave's good graces by posting up more video links than is necessary. But I think I can get away with 'just one more' short one. Look for it on Sunday.
... And, you know you're welcome at Casa Purdie any time! Me and Bev are still working on that last jar of pickled home-grown peppers you gave us. Delish with sandwiches! I used them on a toasted Cuban sandwich (or, as it is known to Latino's, a 'Media Noche',) and it was a mouth watering combination with your peppers.
John
PS - A "Cuban Sandwich" is; layers of slices of oven baked ham, slices of roast pork, Swiss cheese and thin-sliced dill pickles on an Italian style hard-bread. Drizzle a little olive oil on the inside of the sandwich and spread a little butter on the outside/top of the bread. The whole thing is then toasted in a sandwich press (I use my George Forman grill!) The sandwich comes out flattened, hot, melted cheese and toasted golden brown. If you're lucky enough to have a jar of some of Mick's pickled homegrown peppers... you're in like Flint! Try it, it's one of the most delicious sandwiches you'll ever eat! John
That's a great looking set now and cool groove to go with it. Can you demo the Blaemires for us? I bet there are at least hundreds of us that would love to hear an authentic set of Blaemires. Thanks for posting and awesome work JC!
John no worries on the snare beds. Of all things I use a couple small strips of duct tape rolled up placed in the beds. Gives the edge just enough to tension the head nicely. I used a Evans reso glass which is thin. I'm going to try a thicker reso head to see if it helps and can remove the tape in the beds. Think it will. I don't want to hijack your thread here anymore than I have! Sorry. BTW that Cuban sammich sounds good!! Now I'm hungry.

Oh BTW sometime down the road can you please do a sound demo of your Black Beauty snare? I'd love to hear it. It's pretty cool to hear these great vintage drums.

Mick - Here it is buddy! I play it once up to speed on the snare drum alone so you can hear the pattern. (RRLRRLRL) then I move it onto the drums, which is what I want you to practice. Start by playing it slowly but evenly... get it down slow at first. Eventually, you'll be able to play it up to speed. Break down what I'm doing when I move it to the drums and learn it in small sections like I showed you. Hope this helps... BTW, this lick sounds really good with a jingle-stick in your right hand! This is just the bare-bones lick. I'll show you how to add accents and slurs/buzz rolls to really make it swing hard. That's for later, get this part down first.

Glenn, All - I'll be happy to post up sound files of the drums you requested. Be patient. I switch out drums from time to time and when I do, I'll record whatever kit or snare I'm currently messing around with.
