Sonor pancake snare

Recently picked up a Sonor Pancake snare, and had never seen nor heard of one before. Not sure of time frame of manufacture? Do they still make them? Looking for pros and cons of such a snare, tuning preferences as well as durability concerns. Thanks

I've owned a few of them. They are great sounding drums once you find a good combination of heads to use. The most important thing about the heads is that they have the shallowest collar depth that you can find. The reason for this is that the tension rods from the top head "bottom out" against the bottom hoop, and the tension rods from the bottom head "top out" against the top hoop before the drum is properly tensioned. If you can tension the heads up to your desired pitch without the t-rods pushing against the opposing hoops, you should be pleased with a lively sounding little drum.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Interesting enough as now that you mention it, the previous owner had nylon spacers on the tension rods, and must have had them made, as they are quite thick (about 3/8"). Appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Shorter tension rods would not allow you to tension beyond the shorter distance of thread travel for the rod. If you can find heads with extremely shallow collars, shorter rods might be the answer.

Something is not right,...why I wanna see the drum,..Sonor has never had any issues with tension rods, it`s too simple engineering !!

I did not say there are problems with the tension rods. The problem is that most drum head today have deep collars in comparison to the shallow collars on 60's sonor heads. I had no problems with the old sonor head on the pancake snares. Every current production head led to problems with the tension rods pushing against the opposing hoops before they could be brought up to the higher tension that I prefer. This led to s spongy sound instead of the whip-crack sound that I want out of a little skinny snare drum.

I didn`t mean to get misled, sorry,..I mean to imply you. But I still say their is an issue, because the snare should be able to accept skins too !!
