Slingy tales

So I decided to part with my capri kick. Put it on eBay and I got to looking at my Radio King and the two toms 13/16 that I got with that kit. The floor tom and tom tom are gold sparkle that has faded into the famous ginger ale that we all love. Just for the hell of it I started to tune up the toms even with the old crappy heads. OMG. The floor tom sounded gorgeous. I just hapen to have new 16" heads from my recording custom that I swapped out. The tom was missing the bottom head but it had a nice round warmth to it even without the bottom head. I think I just decided to keep my toms. LOL. The floor tom literally was one of the best sounding floor toms I have played. I think I have a new project for the garage for this week. Plus, it's a lot easier finding ginger ale kicks than capri toms.

They look really ginger ale next to my New Classics.

So I took the toms apart and cleaned the wrap with Meguiar's #10 and # 18 Mirror Glaze and lugs and leg brackets/tom bracket with Simichrome. The Meguiar's stuff really brought the life back to the once dull old Ginger Ale that they had become. Aside from a few major bad pits in a few lugs they came very clean and shined up bright. The floor tom shows Feb X 1966 stamp. I am assuming the tom is the same. The mufflers have the little knobs with the barrel shape. I will do the rims tomorrow and hopefully the tom tunes up as well as the floor tom did. I am thinking of getting some vintage Emperors or maybe some standard old coated Ambassadors or Evans equivalent. The original bottom heads were beat up but I believe were the original Slingy factory heads. 45 years old and it still sounded good. If the tom sounds as good as the floor tom I will either keep them for recording or maybe sell them. Wish me luck.

I polished up the hoops tonite. They came out nice. Slingerland really made nice stuff in the 60's. I noticed some of the lugs look they might be crumbling a bit. Anyone ever see that? They still work fine but a few had the die cast dust inside them. About 2-3 I saw out of the 28 that I saw. I was going to pack them with cotton but I left them all original. I really wish now I had a 22/24 inch kick in the faded gold sparkle to go along with the toms. This could be a great set of drums for shows and or recording. The tension rods are so-so. I will get on here and look and see how to take care of them in the coming days. Tomorrow I get my Gretsch Catalina club bop kit. I got it for doing pick-up/acoustic gigs so I can leave my recording customs at home.
