Cut Aways were introduced as Marching drums, but made into a drum set at the request of Dennis St. John, (ref. Bermuda).

I think they're as Cool as any other Concert toms, but just didn't have the broad appeal of a "traditional" look. ( They are heavy, ...My heart goes out to anyone who had to lug these around as marching muti-tenors).
