Slingy Kit Help -- Please Last viewed: 6 hours ago

An acquaintance of mine forwarded some pics of his Slingy kit and I'm trying to determine the model. He's also inquiring as to possible value. However, to me, a kit is worth whatever the highest bidder is willing to pay at the specific time the kit is being offered for sale. Nevertheless, if anyone's got an idea regarding the value of this one, please feel free to throw it out there.

I'm having a little problem trying to identify the correct model of this kit for a couple of reasons:

1. Although the owner claims it's a 1956 kit, he purchased the floor tom as a stand-alone item sometime in 1959. I have no idea whether this kit included a floor tom when it was issued from the factory or not.

2. Although there's only one rack tom seen in the pics you'll notice a second rail consolette mounted on the bass drum. I'm not sure if it is original to the kit or was added by a prior owner. Because of this I'm also not sure whether the kit originally came with one or two rack toms.

The kit includes a 26" bass drum. I don't know the sizes of the toms or the snare drum. Assuming that the snare is from 1956, I'm guessing that it's either a Hollywood Ace Swing Model Radio King or a Concert King, based on the lugs and the strainer. Any other possibilities?

Originally I thought the wrap was a Champagne Sparkle but, from what I've researched, that particular wrap wasn't offered in 1956. I'm guessing that it's a faded "Sparkling Gold". Would you agree?

Any and all additional "words of wisdom" concerning this one would be greatly appreciated. All "ballpark estimates" regarding the possible value of the kit would also be appreciated. I've already stated my position on that subject.

Thanks in advance for your time and your help!

Gary this kit of course is a Radio King kit it probably started life as a Windsor Radio King Ensemble, model #6n. then the floor tom as you stated was added later, as probably was the other tom mount. the color looks very faded as you mentioned without knowing what the interiors look like extra holes etc hard too give you an estimate. here look at this scan. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/slingerland_drum_sets/1951-slingerland-drumsets1.jpg

Thanks for your input! However, the snare drum included with the Windsor Ensemble, Model #6N is different than the one shown with this kit, correct?

It was an optional size the 7x14" was.

Thanks! However, I wasn't referring to the size of the drum. I was referring to the lugs. The ones on the snare with my acquaintance's kit aren't "centered" lugs like those on the snare in the Windsor ensemble kit.

The more I look at the pics I received, the more questions I seem to have. Although the current owner of this kit claims it's a '56 kit, it's got beavertail lugs on all the drums. I was under the impression that Slingerland used beavertails from about 1948 - 1954. Am I mistaken?

Maybe old stock that sat in the store a few years? Back in the 60's when I first took lessons I looked (and dreamed about) at the same Gretsch and Rogers kits in the music store for 3+ years. They never sold for some reason. Or maybe some old Slingerland stock that was on the shelves for a while? The floor tom would be the big question as this was well after the new sound king lugs were out. But maybe the beavertails were still available as they only a few years old back then? Either way man that's a beautiful kit! I love the faded gold sparkle and that bass head is toooo coool. Bowing

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

The badge looks right for a mid 50's kit,but sound king lugs should be on those drums, not beavertails.
