Slingy GK SD Custom Order or Mistake? Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

We’re all familiar with the venerable Gene Krupa Sound King snare drum, which was the drum offered with the majority of cataloged kits. Offered in both 8-lug and 10-lug versions and 5” and 6.5” depths. The mainstay of these wonderful snare drums was the use of the Zoomatic throw and Leedy extended butt.

On a very few occasions, I’ve seen these drums with a Rapid strainer and matching butt. I happen to have a mid 60’s SK 5x14, 10-lug drum with the Rapid strainer and matching butt. It’s obvious that this is how the drum was drilled from the factory. The shell is COB, with the 3 etched lines around the middle, rolled over “half-moon” edges, COB hoops, aluminum lug backing plates and Black/Brass Niles badge, and all original tension rods.

How many of you have ever seen this style GK? Do you think these were custom ordered or did Slingerland just make a mistake? Your thoughts are most welcome!

I’ll take pictures soon and post them.

Hi Mark, I own a drum that is exactly the same as your description.

Never been able to figure out if is a COB festival model or a sound king.

Hopefully someone can chime in and help us with this mystery!

Cheers Steve.

Hi Steve!

Excellent...another owner of one of these! I did consider that this could be a COB Festival...BUT...the Festival had flanged edges, while the Sound King had a "round-over" edge. Plus, the Festival did not have the 3 etched lines.

Let's hope some of our Slingerland experts will have some info on these drums!

Hi Mark, Steve here again, put up a few pics of my drum.

Serial # places it at around 67/68 according to my research,(thanks

vintage drum guide). Still have no idea what model it is, but it is definitely all factory original …………The plot thickens!!

PS just read your first post carefully and your drum is ten lug, mine is eight, apart from that they are "twins".

Steve.
