I have -never- seen one of these!

Does anybody have any info on these copper kits from Slingerland? I never knew they existed until I saw this CL ad. And... it's a 20 incher! Gotta be as rare as roller skates on a chicken!!!

That floor tom is likely 20" diameter x 18" deep.

Here are some nice copper wrapped Slingerlands:

Great video, Rich. I learn something new about vintage drums -every day- here at VDF. Interesting kit. Would have been killer if the kit was all-metal!

If I remember correctly from previous threads on these copper Slingerlands the copper is a very, very thin layer and once it is scratched you can't buff it out or you just end up wearing away the the copper coating.

I always pictured it being a solid copper sheet wrapping the drum.... not the case.

There have been some beautiful examples posted here in the past.

Jim is it more of a copper coating (like plating) would you say? Or just a thin sheet layer of copper? I would have thought the wrap was a actual sheet of copper that was cleared. But I guess that could have been expensive.

Yeah.... copper electro plating that was the phrase I was looking for.

Here it is from none other than DrCJW

Always one big caution on this finish, if I may. Slingerland's Copper finish is a steel wrap onto which was placed a very thin copper plating and outer protective clear coat. If one tries to polish the finish in any way one will remove whatever protective coat is still there, and then quickly wear the copper plating off exposing gray steel. In other words, you do not want to polish Slingerland Copper at all. The only thing you can do is clean the surface with some inert Martin's Guitar Cleaner and Polish for lacquered wood guitars, or something similarly harmless to the clear coat. I know several folks, including a very knowlegeable drum store owner, who innocently polished, now to their great chagrin. Very different story on the chrome stands of course, though I personally think it's always safest if polishing to use a chrome polish without any added abrasive.

Wonderful that you have had them as the original owner all this time! If possible and not too inconvenient, I am sure many folks would love at some point to hear some details: shells, serial ranges, features, maybe some pics. Notwithstanding the thin-skinned nature of the finish and its wear problems, I for one think Slingerland Copper drums are pretty cool.
