Slingy chrome snare: Brass?

Loading...

Is a Slingy chrome snare with 8 lugs but a smooth (no lines) shell and a black and silver Niles badge brass? Having trouble getting the seller to check with a magnet.

I've never owned one of those that was brass...they were all steel. Brass ones have the lines on them...

The Slingerland book shows that the Festival Model chrome snare drum had a brass shell, no lines, 8 lugs (also available with 10 lugs) and was manufactured from '63-72 (silver and black Niles badge). From '73-79 there was an 8 lug version with a steel shell. Hope this helps :)

And the first Sound King had a smooth shell in '63.... 8 or 10 lugs..... 5" or 6.5" deep..... brass

Lines in the shell after that.

Thanks guys. I guess I have to get the guy to do the magnet test. He lives about 65-70 miles away, or I would go check for myself. I am gigging up that way next weekend. so maybe then. Or I could call him I guess. Would really like to have an old Slingy brass snare. I have several Luddy brass's and a dyna but no Slingy.

Early brass snares had no lines, but they wouldn't have a black and silver Niles badge. This one's probably steel.

Another hint would be the strainer. If it's brass, it'll probably have a Zoomatic. If it's steel, it'll have a basic rapid strainer.

So far it is looking like the drum is a steel one. No lines, black and silver badge and rapid strainer. Drat! I must have patience. One will show up sooner or later.

What James said, with exception that the black and silver badge would begin in 1970.....

It's all in the cat scans..........

So Atomic, a Festival could be brass with a black and silver badge.

Atomic, what is the serial number..... that might help a bit ??

But the magnet will still tell all.
