SlingerLeedy Shell Questions Last viewed: 22 hours ago

Got around to removing the wrap from these shells to find what looks like a finish grade mahogany veneer outer ply. This is not the usual porous mahogany outer ply used for wrap designated shells, which these are (JAN 1962 P). As can be seen in the pic, there is bookmatching used on the FT and BD. There are also a couple of dings in the veneer that you would expect on a natural finish drum that has seen playing time. No hole in the BD for a badge either.

Anyone familiar with the type of outer ply Leedy used in their shells prior to the Slingerland era? I ask that because the bearing edges on these shells are of the Leedy era type, not the typical Slingerland fat, round over style.

These would be Slingerland shells typical of the late 50s / early 60s. That's a very nice African Mahogany inner and outer with a poplar core and sweet maple rerings. Those are the year shells I'm looking for (1962). What's your intentions for these shells? Wrap? What color? Have you considered doing a sweeeeeet outer ply of thin wood that could be stained and lacquered? Man ... those are seriously cool shells.

Thanks! The initial question regarding these shells was the bearing edge profiles. They are not the typical round over Slingerland used, but have been identified as the type Leedy used.

That looks just like my 1968 Slingerland edge. There's nothing unusual about it from where I sit.

Here's a pic of three different Slingy toms. The blue agate is a 68, the mahogany is a 71, and the oak is a 79. They have three VERY different and distinct edges. Slingerland changed their edges every now and again for whatever reason they may have had at the time.
