Slingerland veneers in 1979 catalogue

I am interested in learning more about the 4 finishes on the back of the 1979 catalogue listed as Rosewood, Oakwood, Teakwood and Cherrywood (they are shown in both Lacquer and Oil versions). It appears to me from pictures of kits in the catalogue that these are actual veneers of these 4 woods rather than simply stains. This would have been very unusual for a drum manufacturer and I'll bet rather rare. Nowadays many drum companies use exotic veneers, but I sense Slingerland doing so was a bit under the radar at the time. Any info or pics of a real one would be interesting. Was the Walnut and Mahogany on the back of this catalogue a stain or actual wood veneer as well? Also, anyone know more about the copper wrapped set? I saw a pic of one a long time ago and am not sure if it was factory or aftermarket.

KB good question. I was wondering about those myself. Back in the mid 70's I bought a new SL kit in mahogany stain. This was just the bare wood shells with a stain and lacquer finish. I'm not sure if the others shown on that page were a veneer but possibly? The copper wrap was indeed a factory finish as was chome. First time I saw them was inside Elton Johns Yellow Brick Road album. Nigel Olsen had a double bass kit in chrome wrap. They are boss for sure. Hope someone can answer your question about the veneers.

This is very interesting for me. Just yesterday I picked up a late 70's Slingerland kit. It has a real neat looking wood veneer on it. The seller told me it is a 1979 Slingerland Teakwood veneer kit.I've never seen Teakwood so I don't know if it is legit or not. I'm very interested in this subject and also a seat of the pants value estimate and the rarity of these drums. Hope we get more responses.

It's the actual wood veneer. You can't stain maple to have the grain pattern of Rosewood, Oak, Teak, or Cherry. There was a grouping of veneer finishes and a grouping of stained maple finishes. These were obvious to the eye.

Value - 3 ply real wood veneer would have been special order. Those would be rarer (whatever that means). Most of them that I've seen were of the 5 ply variety. Very few 3 ply kits.

Gerald, I know a little bit about wood and can tell you that Teak and Rosewood are both rarer and more costly than Oak or Cherry. Oak and Cherry look very nice and are both available readily in the US. Teak and Rosewood are from Asia and many years ago some quotas were placed on how much old growth Teak could be harvested in Indonesia and Malaysia. Now they are mostly managed forests with new growth and none of the older tightly ringed and denser teak. Don't know about Rosewood but as you know, China will sell anything including their last old growth forests of Rosewood I would speculate
