Slingerland Sound King

Loading...

Found this one at a local shop. Instantly knew it was brass from the weight.

Is the black and brass badge mid to late 60's?

Big tone knob points toward the 70's and it has the wide clamp down on the zoomatic and leedy style butt.

Somebody decided felt squares inside the shell was the best way to dampen it. I tried some goo gone but the galvanized finish is going with it. Were these shells painted inside? Looks like chrome underneath.

Yes it is 60's badge and muffler.. Should be plating under that paint...

Put a "Coated Vintage A" batter on it... that should be all the damping you will need...

Cheers

Oddly enough, I have a correct era tone control in my drum junk. I have almost no Slingerland parts but I have that. Funny how things work out.

Great find!! Curious damping approach but no harm done. Outstanding snares. Glad you are not missing the knob on the throw. Nice chrome on these. Should polish up quite well. Enjoy.

Slingerland's Sound King, aka Krupa, snare drum was made by the thousands! As such, they underwent many changes over the years. However, the one I like the best is the one pictured in the post. My preference has always been for the shells with full round-over edges, aluminum lug backing plates, COB hoops and the Zoomatic strainer that uses the wide clamp to allow for using standard length wires with straps, rather than the odd length original wires with a metal strap for the Leedy butt. Slingerland used this same style shell up to around 1971, but used COS hoops in place of COB. Still a great sounding drum, though! Attached is a picture of a 1971 Sound King I had.

Yeah, the big knob, the idiot tab, and the wide clamps all point to around 1968-70. The serial is 209,000 but I know that doesn't mean a whole lot.

It's defiantly COB hoops and shell.

I have a 64 leedy that's basically the same but with the small knob and the metal strap throw off.

This snare is going to be a workhorse!

From now on I'm referring to it as "Gene".

Dawn bath on the hardware, some 3in1 oil in the lugs, bar keeper's friend on the shell and hoops, and Gene is back in action!

Been playing KISS songs all morning.

Peter Criss used a 60's Gene Krupa on the first album (you can hear it plain as day)and was known to record with Slingerland even though he was a Pearl endorser.

Still need one of the little screws for the zoomatic.
