I picked up this snare on ebay, waiting for it in the mail. From the badge I gather 63-69. Can anyone tell me some more info about it?

What you have is the very popular Gene Krupa Sound King snare drum. Slingerland produced thousands of these and were usually included in most cataloged kits. Based on the serial number and half-extended wires, I would say your drum is about 1967 to early 1968. By around mid-68, Slingerland introduced a new slide gate on the Zoomatic strainer to take advantage of snare wires that used filament tape snare straps and also began using "normal" length snare wires. What I like about your model year is that it will have COB hoops, rounded bearing edges and aluminum lug backing plates. The shell is also COB. About the only minor issue I see is that the snare wires haven't been set up properly. The butt end of the wires needs to be moved more so that the end plate is completely off the bearing edge. I've attached 3 pictures of a Sound King snare drum I had, that used a set of Puresound Zoomatic wires. Hope this info helps and enjoy your GK Sound King snare drum!

They're great sounding snare drums and I'm sure you'll like it! It will arrive before you know it. Enjoy!
I had a '67 of those... traded it 30 years ago and have regretted doing it ever since..
Cheers
