Slingerland Snare I.D. Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hello VDF,

I picked up what I believe is a Slingerland Artist BDP snare. 8 lugs with a zoomatic throw. The shell is definitely one ply as I can't see any other laminations. Black and brass Niles badge with a serial of 26154. The wrap looks like new which I think is suspicious. Here's my questions about this snare.

Being one ply is this an Artist and if so any idea on the year? The snare beds seem really cut down (I'd say 1/8" at least) so I'm wondering if these were factory done or worn down over time or ground down by persons unknown? What exactly was the idea about sanding down the snare beds? Another is the wrap seam is directly behind the snare gate. I always thought the wrap was mid way through a lug or so to hold it together should the glue separate. Could this suggest a rewrap but the grommet looks good. There are no dates and the standard "P" as one would find in wrapped snares. The hoops are all COB and everything is there save the muffler which I can find. Any ideas on whether the BDP is more desirable and maybe a fair market value(which I know is way down!!)

Many thanks!!

8 lug..... Zoomatic..... says Artist, it was the only drum to have the Zoomatic aside from the Sound King COB

There was a 7 inch depth and a 10 lug model available too....

Serial number puts it at '62/'63

Nice drum... not a lot of single ply Artists were actually made, according to Dr Wenk's articles on Slingerland in the Drum Guide which is where I get all my info.

Beautiful drum -- that wood looks pristine.

Like Kevin said, that serial number dates to 1962 or '63. Slingerland started using serial numbers in 1962 and you've got a low number. Other details are consistent with that timeframe:

The two-hole Zoomatic strainer was in use between 1962 and 1968. (1962-65 if there's no "idiot tab" on the top of the throwoff.)

The black & gold Niles badge was used between 1962 and 1970.
As for your snare beds, they look pretty much like the ones on my 1956 drum. They're deep, but likely factory. If you ever need replacement snare wires, 16-strand Puresound Custom wires are perfect for these deep & narrow snare beds. 20-strand wires were too wide for my drum's snare bed, causing major problems with sympathetic buzz.

I can't say for certain, but I think your wrap may be original. The pearl pattern is a dead ringer for the 1964 example in DrCJW's article. My own drum's seam is directly between two lugs, so it doesn't surprise me that yours isn't under a lug.

Very nice snare Vince, I have a red spkl single ply Artist as my main snare. Everything looks right on your snare, the wrap seam is in the correct spot. The last single ply Artist I saw on ebay went for $450, blue sparkle I believe which is pretty common wrap. BDP is common as well though.

That wrap is original...no repro bdp ever looked like that. The seam is in the correct place and the edges and beds look original.

Nice drum!

That's my student snare drum I started out on! (Or identical to it) if it has 8 lugs. That was a fantastic-sounding drum. Played it for a year then traded it for a set of Apollo drums! Not a step up... I was sad to see the snare go, and mentioned that to the store owner, who offered it to me, for some reason I said no, that's OK, but still missed it.
