OK, so here's my latest project, complete with another Hillbilly DIY paint job. What I know or suspect about this drum: It's an 8x15" Slingerland snare, picked up for a song because it has no badge, the wrong batter hoop and tension rods, had been re-drilled for a Ludwig throw-off and butt plate (which they conveniently relocated to the panels ADJACENT to the snare beds!), and had been completely spray painted flat black. I believe it to be a circa 1960 Orchestra model. It seems to have a 3 ply shell, mahogany inner, maple outer. There were apparently once top AND bottom mufflers, now long gone; I never use them anyway, so I filled the holes. I wonder if anyone can confirm the era for me. Also, how hard is it going to be to find a 15" 8 lug stick-saver hoop for the top? I initially thought the spacing on the Ludwig pieces looked the same as the filled-holes of the originals, but I now realize they are not, and that's most likely why they changed panels for them; anyway, I'm preparing to dismantle a student-level '70s Slingie snare to steal the throw-off and butt, unless someone has some cheap I can buy? I'll trade you a P-85 and butt! Lastly, I have to mention that at least one of the roughly 6 coats of paint I sanded off was latex house paint! You can see some runs inside the shell still.
