From vintage drum bug

Once I found a complete set of NSK Slingys for $300 around my area. It was 12,14,16,20 w matching set on Burgundy lacquer (Might not be the actual name of the finish). I knew it was a quality set but i didn't pull the trigger because Im very shy on buying anything younger than 1981…Im still knocking myself for being such a donkey…

Only $300? Ouch.

Are you guys who are saying the snare is worth $500-900 assuming it's a solid shell Radio King? There's no evidence of that - I think it's a Studio King matching drum, which would make it about a $300 drum based on the market.

You are probably right. I have included a blurry picture of the interior of the snare. It looks to have plies. Also, can anyone tell if the tom mounting hardware in the pic below is accurate. In addition, is it odd to have a five lug tom that is supposed to be 12 inches? Please see pic below.

The 12" SK toms that I have seen are all six luggers.. could be just a weird pic I think. Most of the adverse comments that I have seen on these kits is from guys who I suspect, have never played one. Those who own them, or have owned them, love the kits.

The hardware seems correct to me...

Cheers

Seller just sent me the pic below. It clearly is a five lug 12 inch tom. Is that anything to be concerned with? Did they make a lower line version of this kit. All the pics I have found online have toms with six lugs. The ten inch is a five lug which seems normal, but not the twelve.

Yes agreed.. I have been looking also, I cannot find another with 5 lugs either.. would not think it a major issue though..

Five lug 12" toms are a Gretsch thing and they work just fine there and have since the dawn of time. It is odd to see 5 lugs on a Slingerland though. My Nashville 12 has 6 lugs.

One possibility might be that there were very early production drums and they were sourcing their die-cast hoops from Gretsch which would have necessitated a five lug design.

I don't think it indicates that these are a lower series or anything like that, just a production quirk of some sort. They were trying to replicate the Gretsch design to a degree and the 5 lug small toms are part of that sound. Also Gibson bought Slingerland from Gretsch so there is another connection there that might have played a part.

BTW: the tom mount on the RIMS plate is the same one that my Nashville tom has although mine is bolted right to the drum.

I don't see how you could go wrong at that price. I love mine (12/14/18 "bop" set in Green Sparkle).

Buy them man, a kit like that would fetch 2.5 K in these parts.

I'm envious, let us know what you decide to do.

I have never seen a 5 lug 12" Studio King drum either, but like K.O. said, it might have been an early attempt at the Gretsch thing. What is the depth of the 12" drum? It almost looks square.

Lossforgain is right about the snare. I immediately assumed one ply.

Are you in a position to go and see them in person?

Good luck.

"They were trying to replicate the Gretsch design to a degree and the 5 lug small toms are part of that sound. Also Gibson bought Slingerland from Gretsch so there is another connection there that might have played a part."

Sam Bacco, who was in charge at Slingerland during the time these were conceived, openly admitted to using the Gretsch formula for these drums. Before he went to Slingerland he was making Gretsch clones for Nashvillle studio drummers.
