Slingerland mixing shells in the mid-late 70s?

Loading...

I picked up a new 70s Slingerland kit last week. It appears to be a factory original kit from around 76-77ish. The 2 rack toms are 3ply shells with re-rings, and the bass drum and floor tom are 5ply w/o rings. Based on the condition of the wrap etc, it looks like all of these pieces have been together for a long time. I know that this was a trasitional period. Would Slingerland have sold a kit with mix-matched shells? The wrap is just a common gloss black, so I could see it possibly have been pieced together, but the condition of all the drums are the same and leads me to believe that they are a factory set. Any thoughts? I left my camera at home, but I'll post up some pictures tomorrow.

How close are the #'s?

I've got a similar kit. All blue gloss, all 27XXXX. 13 and 16 are 3ply. 14 and 24 or 5ply. I always figured it was a pieced together kit but now you've got me wondering too.

Mine are pretty thrashed so I've been planning on breaking them up into two kits by adding in a couple of appropriate orphans and re-wrapping.

I have heard that Slingerland was fairly welcoming as far as special orders went, and that you could order any finish on either style shell, although if I had done that I probably would have ordered 5 ply for the kick and or large toms and 3 ply for high toms or vice a versa,or maybe a different lay up for the snare, like Deadheads kit, getting a 5lpy in the middle of a 13 and 16 doesn't make as much sense to me unless you were trying to get away from that 1' difference in size hard to tune thing. Whether Slingerland would send out a mixed kit because they were out of certain 3 or 5 ply sizes that say I have no idea, and at that time people were not as hung up on wood type and construction details.

Well, now after looking at the serials I'm thinking mine was pieced together. The rack toms are in the upper 200ks, lower 300ks, the floor tom is upper 300 range and the kick is in the 400s. They seem too far spread apart to me to be a factory set. Also the re-rings look different on the 2 rack toms, the 14" has a much fatter re-ring? Oh well, nice sounding drums either way, the 5ply and 3ply actually blend quite nicely.
